Atmospheric Water Generators

Rural School Water Solution, Kitui County, Kenya

How atmospheric water generation transformed education and health for 450 students

Kitui County, Kenya
Students at Kitui County school

Project Highlights

Beneficiaries

450 students and staff at Kitui Primary School

Water Production

500 liters daily from atmospheric water generators

Energy Solution

Solar-powered AWG systems with battery backup

Impact

98% reduction in waterborne illnesses among students

The Challenge

Kitui County in Kenya experiences prolonged dry seasons with average humidity levels of 40-60%. The rural primary school with 450 students had no reliable water source. Students spent 2-3 hours daily walking 5km to fetch contaminated water from seasonal streams, leading to:

72%
Students reporting waterborne illnesses annually
42%
Average student absenteeism during dry months
35%
Below national average in academic performance

Traditional water solutions like boreholes were not feasible due to the deep water table and high mineral content. The school needed a sustainable, off-grid solution that could provide clean drinking water year-round despite the arid conditions.

The Solution

Aqua4Life implemented a solar-powered atmospheric water generation system designed specifically for arid environments. The solution included:

  • Two PW-HR 250L Industrial Atmospheric Water Generators with desiccant technology
  • Integrated solar power system with battery storage
  • Multi-stage filtration system with UV sterilization
  • 1,000L water storage tanks with distribution points
  • Community training program for operation and maintenance

The desiccant-based technology was specifically chosen for its efficiency in low-humidity environments (20-90% humidity). The solar power integration ensures continuous operation during Kenya's frequent power outages.

Implementation

The project was completed in three phases with community participation at every stage:

1

Site Assessment

Comprehensive evaluation of local climate conditions, water needs, and infrastructure requirements.

2

System Installation

Installation of AWG units, solar panels, storage tanks, and distribution points completed in 7 days.

3

Training & Handover

Two-week training program for teachers and selected students on system operation and maintenance.

The implementation was completed in August 2024, just before the start of the dry season when water scarcity is most severe in Kitui County.

Results & Impact

The installation of atmospheric water generators transformed the school environment and community health:

98%
Attendance Increase
0
Waterborne Illness Cases
15,000+
Plastic Bottles Saved Annually
45%
Academic Performance Improvement

The reliable water source enabled the school to establish a nutrition program, with students receiving a daily meal prepared using clean water. Girls' attendance increased by 63% as they no longer needed to spend hours fetching water.

"Before the Aqua4Life system, our students spent more time fetching water than studying. Now, we have clean water available throughout the school day. The health improvements have been remarkable, and we've seen our test scores rise significantly."
— Mrs. Wanjiku, School Principal

Environmental Impact

The project achieved significant environmental benefits through sustainable water generation:

Resource Conservation

Preserved local groundwater resources by eliminating the need for drilling

Plastic Reduction

Eliminated 15,000+ single-use plastic bottles annually

Renewable Energy

100% solar-powered operation with zero carbon emissions

The system operates with minimal environmental impact, using the natural humidity in the air without depleting groundwater resources or contributing to plastic pollution.
